How to Get Rid of Springtail Bugs

Springtail bugs range in size from 1 to 5 mm, which makes them nearly undetectable with an unaided eye. The springtail bug has an appendage under its abdomen called a furcula. The furcula recoils and acts like a spring, allowing the bug to jump. because of its locomotion method and its size, the springtail bug is often mistaken for a flea. Although springtails present little to no threat to humans, their appearance in large numbers can be startling. They thrive in moist, dark places and feed on decaying plant matter and fungi. When found inside, they flock to basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces and the soil of potted plants. When found outside, experts recommend leaving springtails alone as they serve as an important part of the ecological system and cause no harm to plants. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Eliminate excess moisture in your home. Use fans and a dehumidifier in particularly moist or damp rooms in your home, such as the basement and bathroom. This will deter springtails from taking up residence inside.

    • 2

Check your pipes for leaks. Look under all of the sinks in your home to see if you have a leaking pipe. This type of stagnant water attracts springtails. If you have a leak, call a plumber to repair it.

    • 3

Inspect the gutters outside of your home. If the gutters are not working properly, this can cause excess moisture to accumulate near your home and attract springtails. If your gutters aren't in working order, call a professional to repair them.

    • 4

Sprinkle cornstarch around the perimeter of your home. Cornstarch will absorb excess moisture and deter the springtails from seeking shelter inside your home.

    • 5

Mix two cups of water with one tsp. of dish detergent in a spray bottle. Spray the areas where you see the springtails most often. This solution is enough to kill springtail bugs; a chemical pesticide is not necessary.

    • 6

Place mulch and compost piles far from your home. The moisture and dead plant matter attract springtails, and keeping them both far from your home will help keep springtails from coming inside.
