The Complete How to for a Kazoo

If you are interested in playing a musical instrument but don't have previous experience, a kazoo is a great instrument to try. Playing the kazoo is simple enough for children to learn, but adults can enjoy playing it as well. The sound is fun and lively and makes a whimsical addition to many songs. Once you learn the technique of playing, you can play along with just about any song.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wide end of the kazoo between your lips. Your lips should cover the hole entirely. Hold the body of the kazoo with either hand as you keep it in your mouth.

    • 2

Say a simple word while the kazoo is in your lips. Try something like "who" several times. You should hear a buzzing sound when you form the word.

    • 3

Hum notes of different pitches. Try some high notes and some low ones. Remember to always hum when you are playing the kazoo. If you only blow, you won't make a musical note.

    • 4

Hum a simple song such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." Once you can do this, move on to more complicated songs if you like. You may need to listen to a song a few times before you can play it on the kazoo, since you play the song on the instrument by humming the notes.

Experiment with different sound effects by humming in different ways (loud, soft, long, short and interrupted bursts). You can even try moving your index finger on and off of the hole in the center of the instrument to vary the sound.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your kazoo ceases to play notes even when you're humming, you may need to replace the tissue paper underneath the hole in the middle of the instrument. Most kazoos have a plastic cap over this hole that you can easily pop off. Remove the old tissue paper and cut a new piece that will fit over the hole. Replace the cap and resume playing.
