How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 2002 Ford Escort
2002 Ford Escorts rely on a fuel-injection system to deliver gasoline from the fuel tank to the engine. As with all fuel-injected Fords, the Escort fuel-injection system has an inline fuel filter, mounted underneath the Escort. Ford Motor Company recommends replacing this filter every 15,000 miles for optimum fuel efficiency and fuel-system component life. If you possess basic auto-repair skills, you can replace the fuel filter on your 2002 Ford Escort in less than 30 minutes.

Drive the Escort's front wheels on the ramps. Shift it into park and set the parking brake. Place the wheel chock on the ground directly behind either of the rear wheels.

Slide the drain pan under the Escort, just behind the front wheels. Climb under with the pocket screwdriver and new fuel filter.

Follow the fuel lines forward until they reach the firewall. This is where the fuel filter is located. Pry the fuel-filter retaining clips out of the fuel-line ends where they meet the filter, using the pocket screwdriver.

Pull the fuel-line ends off the filter by hand, pull the filter out of the retaining band by hand and place the filter into the drain pan.

Slide the new filter into the retaining band, making sure the flow arrow points towards the engine and not the fuel tank. Slide the two fuel lines over the inlet and outlet of the filter and push the clips into place by hand.

Climb out with the tool, drain pan and old filter. Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position. Wait 10 seconds and then turn it off. Turn it back to the "Run" position once more, wait 10 seconds and start the Escort.

Move the wheel chock, release the parking brake and drive the Escort off the ramps.
