How to Crochet a Lady's Hat
Crochet a lady's hat to match a winter outfit or give as the perfect handmade gift for a special woman in your life. This simple pattern should work up in under an afternoon, but the pretty look of the double crochet keeps the finished hat from looking too much like a standard skull cap. Even a beginner can tackle this pattern, but expect to "frog," or unravel, your work a couple of times as you are learning.

1
Pull out about two feet of yarn from the skein. Hold out two finger on your left hand, making a "gun." Wrap the doubled yarn over the fingers until you create a loop, then pull it through the loop to create a slipknot.
-
2
Insert your hook into the slipknot with your right hand and pull the knot onto the shaft. Face the hook towards you, holding it horizontally. The yarn ends should dangle below the hook. Hold the end of the yarn that is still attached to the skein and wrap it over the hook, catching it with the hook as you bring it back down. Pull the hook through to "chain one." Create five more chains.

3
Insert the hook into the first chain you made. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through; this is called making a "slip stitch." You now have a loop. Chain 4 and then double crochet into the loop; chain 1. Repeat the double crochet, chain 1 for 11 times. Use a slip stitch to complete the circle or "join" on the 3rd chain you made when you first chained 4.
-
4
Chain 4 and double crochet into the first chain space of the last row. Double crochet and chain 1 into the same chain space in which you just made the last double crochet. Double crochet and chain 1 into the next chain space. Do this twice for each chain space all the way around. Join the round with a slip stitch once you've completed the round.
-
5
The first chain 1 space of the prior row, make 4 chains, then double crochet and chain 1. In the next 3 chains, double crochet and chain 1. Double crochet then chain 1 twice in the next chain space. Do this for the next 4 chain spaces. For the next three chain spaces, only do one chain, one double crochet; then the next four spaces are double crocheted inside twice. Repeat this pattern all the way around and join.
-
6
For the next 3 rows, begin by chaining 4, then double crochet and chain 1 into the first chain space. Double crochet and chain 1 in each chain space around. Join together. After you've completed a total of 7 rows, tie off the end of you work with a knot and weave in the ends.

Tips & Warnings
Remember to always crochet a test swatch to check for gauge and that you like the crochet style with the yarn you've used.
To double crochet, wrap yarn around the hook as explained previously, insert the hook into the loop, wrap the yarn around again, pull through the loop. You should have 3 loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through 2 of the loops, leaving 2 loops on the hook. Wrap yarn around the hook again and pull through the last loops.
