The bass guitar is a four-stringed instrument whose notes are written on the bass clef. Reading music for the bass is similar to reading music for other instruments. A combination of notes, rests and other symbols notated on the bass clef tell bass players which notes to play, at what pitch to play them, and how long to hold them out. Learning to read music for the bass effectively takes practice, but learning how to read bass notes can be a useful skill for any aspiring bass guitar player.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the bass clef symbol. A bass clef is located at the beginning of a piece of sheet music and looks like a large comma with a colon in front of it. Any time you see the bass clef at the beginning of a sheet of music, you will be reading the music staff with bass notes.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the five horizontal lines of a music staff. Each of the lines represents a bass note. The lines are G-B-D-F-A. Use a phrase to help you memorize these notes. Grizzly Bears Don't Fly Airplanes might help.

    • 3

Memorize the spaces on the bass clef music staff. The notes on the spaces are A-C-E-G. A good phrase to help you commit this to memory is All Cars Eat Gas.

    • 4

Read notes going below the staff in reverse musical alphabet order. The space below the first line on the bass clef is an F, the line below that space is E (the lowest note on bass guitar). Read notes above the staff in ascending musical alphabet order. The top line on the staff is A, the space above that is B and the first line above the staff is C. The highest note on bass guitar is the space above the second line over the bass staff, which is an F.

Read whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and other notes for bass the same way as you read them for other notes. A whole note equals a full measure of music, a half note equals half a measure, a quarter note is a quarter of a measure and an eighth note is an eighth of a measure. This indicates how long notes are held when you play them. Time values for bass do not differ from time values of other instruments. Read the matching rest values to the notes the same way.
