How to Restart DHCP Client Service Retry

DHCP allows your computer to obtain an IP address from a router or server.

On most home networks, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides an Internet Protocol (IP) address to each connected computer. Each computer requires an IP address to browse the Web or utilize other services on the network. If your computer is unable to obtain an IP address from your network's server or router and you are sure that the cables are connected properly, one possible reason is that the Windows DHCP client service is not running or has failed. Restart the DHCP client service to troubleshoot this issue.

Instructions

1. Click the Windows Orb or Start button, and then click "Control Panel."

2. Click the "Switch to Classic View" or "Classic View" link on the left side of the window in Windows XP and Vista. In Windows 7, click the "View by:" menu in the upper-right corner of the window and choose "Small icons."

3. Double-click "Administrative Tools," and then double-click the "Services" icon in the window that appears.

4. Double-click "DHCP Client" on the list of services. A new window appears.

5. Click the "Start" button. If the "Start" button is grayed out, click the "Stop" button and then click "Start." The DHCP client service restarts.

6. Confirm that "Automatic" is selected on the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type." If "Manual" or "Disabled" is selected, change it to "Automatic."

7. Click "OK" and close any remaining open windows to return to the desktop.
