If you're moving to or buying a new car in Georgia, you'll have to obtain a new set of Georgia license plate tags, as well as registration documents for the vehicle. New residents must transfer registrations within 30 days of relocation to Georgia. Existing residents have 30 days to register a newly acquired vehicle. Make the process smooth by being prepared and organized.
Things You'll Need
- Tag and title application
- Photo identification
- Current registration and title
- Bill of sale
- Proof of insurance
- Proof of emissions testing
Download and print the "MV-1 Tag and Title Application" from the Georgia Department of Revenue (see Resources). Fill in all of the requested information, listing all named owners of the vehicle.
Gather photo identification for all titled owners, bill of sale or current registration and title. Deliver the documents with the application to the Georgia Tag Office in the county you reside in (see Resources for a list of offices). Supply proof of insurance and proof of emissions testing if required.
Pay the tag and title fees as charged when the application is processed. Tag fees for standard passenger vehicles are $20. Rates for other vehicles vary and can cost as much as $725 for a weight-rated commercial vehicle. Title fees are $18. Make a check or money order payable to "Office of the Tax Commissioner."
