How to Replace a Doorbell Transformer
A home's doorbell is a simple low-voltage circuit made up of a button, an electrical transformer and a buzzer or chime assembly. The elements and the wiring that connect them rarely fail, but the most common reason the doorbell stops working is a faulty transformer. Replacing it is a quick and inexpensive repair. 1
Shut off the electrical power to the doorbell circuit at the main breaker panel. It will typically be on the entry area lighting or outlet circuit. Locate the doorbell transformer. Transformers for the doorbell are usually installed near the front door of the house, in the basement, attic, or an entry closet.
-
2
Disconnect the doorbell circuit wires from the transformer, using a screwdriver to loosen the two connection screws.
-
-
3
Remove the two screws securing the wall cover plate and transformer, using the screwdriver, and pull the assembly away from the junction box beneath. This will expose the wiring connections from the transformer to the house circuit.
-
4
Remove the wire nuts by hand to detach the transformer wires connected to the electrical wires. Retain the wire nuts for reconnecting the new transformer.
-
5
Position the new transformer beside the wall junction box and reconnect the new transformer's lead wires to the corresponding colored house circuit wires with wire nuts, connecting the white wire from the transformer to the house circuit's white wire and connecting the transformer's black wire to the house circuit's black wire. Cut a 1½-inch piece of electrical tape with scissors and wrap each of the wire connections to ensure the connections remain secure.
-
6
Align the transformer's base cover over the wall junction box and attach the cover by replacing the screws removed in Step 3.
-
7
Turn the electrical power back on to the doorbell's circuit.
