How to Build Your Own Garage Cabinet

If your garage has become messy and cluttered, you may want to build a garage cabinet. Adding a cabinet will increase the versatility and organization of your garage. Building the cabinet is inexpensive, and no finish is required. Cabinets can be built from 3/4-inch-thick melamine sheets available at your local home improvement store.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Paper
• 3/4-inch melamine
• Circular saw
• Roo glue (or equivalent)
• Power drill
• 1 1/2-inch-long grabber screws

Instructions

Determine Size of Parts

1. Measure the space in your garage for the cabinet, using a measuring tape.

2. Write down a cut list, using pencil and paper. You should have two sides, a top, a bottom, and a back. Also calculate the number of shelves you would like. Subtract the thickness of the sides on the top, bottom, and shelves.

3. Cut all parts out of 3/4-inch white melamine with a circular saw. Make sure the parts are cut square and to exact size.

Cabinet Assembly

1. Drill pilot holes in the sides for screws with a power drill and a 1/8-inch drill bit. This will prevent the screws from damaging the material.

2. Apply a thin layer of glue to each seam. Roo glue is recommended for melamine joints. Screw the sides to the top and bottoms and shelves, using 1 1/2-inch-long grabber screws and a power drill.

3. Apply a thin layer of glue around the back. Fasten the back to the sides, top, bottom and shelves, using 1 1/2-inch-long grabber screws and a power drill. Allow the cabinet to dry fully before moving. Failure to allow glue to dry will break the glue joints and weaken the cabinet.
