Tuning the violin is an essential skill for any novice or seasoned player to master. There are several methods for violin tuning, but one of the most effective ways to tune your violin is by using a chromatic tuner. A chromatic tuner is an electronic tuning device that allows you to customize tuning settings to your particular instrument and/or tuning preference. Violins have four strings, and although there are several alternate tunings that can be applied to the violin, the standard violin tuning is G, A, D and E.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a chromatic tuner that produces an audible tone for each note. It is also a good idea to purchase a tuner that can attach to the bridge of your violin. This will just make the tuning process more convenient.

    • 2

Tune the A string, or the second thickest string on your violin, first. Play the A note on your chromatic tuner, and then match the note by playing your violin while adjusting the tuning knobs on the head of your violin.

    • 3

Repeat this procedure to tune the E, D and G strings on your violin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tune your violin before playing. Violin strings are sensitive. The slightest bump of the tuning keys can cause the violin to go completely out of tune. Overexposure to humidity can cause tuning issues as well.
