How to Write a Letter to Close a Credit Card Account

About half of the U.S. population has two or more credit cards, account to the Center for media research.

Writing a letter to close your credit card account provides you with written documentation for the request. The card company will respond by standard mail, confirming that the account has been closed. No further charges will be allowed on the card but you will remain responsible for any remaining balance and monthly statements will be sent to you.

Instructions

1. Get the address for your credit card company from the billing statement or call the customer service number on the back of the card.

2. Write a letter asking that the account be closed immediately, and that a note be placed on your credit reports indicating that the account was "closed by the cusomter's request." This will show other creditors that you alone made the decision to close the accounts and the action wasn't forced because of the card company. Include your name, address and telephone number in the letter. You don't have to give a reason for closing the account, but include that if you wish.

3. Destroy the credit card by cutting it in half. Place the credit card and the letter in an envelope and mail it to the card company.

4. Wait for confirmation from your card company and keep the letter in your files.
