Always be on the lookout for debris that may cut or puncture a tire.

The first step in fixing a Craftsman riding lawnmower is locating the problem that is causing the lawnmower to malfunction. This step can take longer than the actual repairs, since the large number of moving parts on a lawnmower makes it hard to diagnose any problem. However, if you inspect certain areas on the lawnmower, you can quickly troubleshoot some of the more common problems lawnmower owners encounter. Then you can break out your toolbox and safety gear and tackle the repair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect each tire for leaks. If a tire is visibly low, look for a hole in the tire. A can of tire sealant will fix small holes. If it is large, the tire will need to be replaced.

    • 2

Adjust the cutting deck to its highest cutting position. On some Craftsman lawnmowers, the height adjuster is a large lever just to the right of the steering wheel. On other lawnmowers, it is on either side of the driver's seat. Look at the blades under the deck for any cracks or irregularities. Keep in mind that all blades have a bend, so look for a bend that does not look natural. If the blades are irregularly bent, the mower can feel out of balance when the blades are turned on. Blades need to be replaced if there are any problems with their shape.

    • 3

Lift the hood of the lawnmower. Make sure there is fuel in the gas tank. Also make sure there is oil in the motor by unscrewing the yellow oil cap. If there is no oil or gas in the engine, put some in.

Check the spark plug connected to the motor. It will be under a black hose that runs alongside the motor. The hose will pop right off the plug. If the tip or the side if the plug is cracked, the motor will not receive the required spark to turn on. Replace it with a new one.

    • 5

Unscrew the two knobs on top of the motor. These keep the air filter in place. If the filter is dirty, it will need cleaned because a dirty air filter causes the motor to work harder, and feel sluggish. Blue-lined air filters can be washed out with detergent and water. Black-lined air filters have to be replaced.
