How to Find the Square Footage of an Area That Has Different Lengths on Each Side

Save

Not all rooms are square, but to calculate the area of a room with uneven sides, it simply has to treated as if it was. The simple calculation can be applied to floors, walls or ceilings--any plane with an angled side. Or it can just be used to calculate the area of drawings or any surface. We will use a room as an example below.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Calculator
  • Measure the width of the room. Record this measurement as dimension "A."

  • Measure the shortest of the two different wall lengths. Record this measurement as dimension "B."

  • Measure the longest of the two walls and record this measurement as dimension "C."

  • Calculate the area of the room by the following formula:

    dimension A x dimension B= area segment "1"
    (dimension C - dimension B) x dimension A = area segment "2"
    area segment 2 ÷ 2 = area segment 3
area segments 1 + 3 = Square footage of room
