Instructions for a Hide & Seek Quilt

A "hide and seek" quilt is an easy quilt for beginning quilters to sew. It involves basically one block turned in different ways. The block uses only straight stitches and you only have to cut out squares and rectangles. This is a good quilt to use up some of your scrap fabric. Use pastel colors to make a baby quilt, primary colors for a child's quilt or "whatever' colors for an everybody quilt. Make this quilt any size you want by adding or subtracting blocks.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out 210 five-inch squares of the assorted print fabric. Cut 35 rectangles of the white fabric that measure 5 inches by 14 inches.

    • 2

Sew three squares together side by side. Sew another three together in the same manner. Iron all the seams.

    • 3

Line up one row of three squares along the long side of the white rectangle. Pin them in place and sew straight across. Repeat with the other set of three squares on the other side of the white rectangle to make one block.

    • 4

Repeat the process to make 35 blocks to make a twin-size quilt. Iron all the blocks.

    • 5

Take two of the blocks and pin them together, with the rectangle of the first block being horizontal and the second block being vertical. Pin the two blocks together and sew in place.

    • 6

Keep adding blocks, alternating the direction of the white rectangle, until you have a row of five blocks. Iron the new seams. Make six more rows.

    • 7

Lay out the rows on a large, flat surface such as a floor. Alternate the rows so that one row starts with a horizontal white rectangle and the next row starts with a vertical rectangle. Sew together all seven rows to complete the quilt top.

    • 8

      Iron the quilt top.

    • 9

Spread your backing fabric on the floor and top with the quilt batting. Lay the finished quilt on top of the batting. Hold the layers together using safety pins.

    • 10

Tie the layers together using a needle and yarn. Thread the needle and stick it through all the layers. Pull the yarn almost all the way through, leaving three inches. Tie the yarn in a knot and trim the excess, leaving one inch.

    • 11

Repeat the tying process at the corners of the blocks.

    • 12

Fold under the raw edges of the quilt and use pins to hold in place. Sew around the edge of the quilt to finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat to decrease your cutting time considerably. Line up the fabric with the lines on the mat, lay the ruler where you want to cut and follow the cutting line with the rotary blade.

  • Wash and iron all your fabric before cutting to prevent uneven shrinkage in your quilt.
