Black angus is the most common breed of beef cattle in the U.S.

Starting a black angus cattle business is challenging. The care and livelihood of the animals is totally under your control and responsibility. To be successful, ensure that enough land is available for each animal to pasture and to absorb each animal's waste. Pasture should be opened in a staggered fashion so that the animals get the most out of each parcel. The American Angus Association is responsible for registering black angus cattle, and so each cattle should have certification from this organization.

  • 5 acres of pastureland for each head of cattle
  • Water troughs
  • Water pump
  • Irrigation
  • Cattle feed
  • Barn or shelter
  • Fencing
  • Corral
  • Registered black angus cattle

Instructions

    • 1

      Prepare land for cattle by fencing it with electric or barbed wire fencing. Fence off sections for staggered pasturing.

      Build a corral to house cattle while feeding them grain.

      Build a barn or other shelter for use in inclement weather and for administering veterinary care.

      Install water troughs and water pumps to fill the troughs.

      Install field irrigation.

    • 6

      Purchase registered black angus cattle from a local beef producer or livestock auction.

      Purchase cattle feed as needed to supplement pasture or to feed them prior to slaughter.

    • 8

      Contract with a local slaughterhouse to process the meat.
