How to Start a Domain
Starting a domain is a process that takes about three minutes, from creating an account to adding the server. A domain name is the "address" of a website that connects to an IP address. So, while computers recognize a domain name as an IP address, a visitor recognizes the domain name as the actual name and that is what they remember when they type it into a Web browser. A domain name is the way people find your site. Registering one is very easy.

Registering a domain
-
1
Determine what domain name you want. Because there are millions of domains already registered, you need to cross-reference what you've picked and see if it is taken. To do this, visit a site like GoDaddy.com or eNom.com and see if it is available. These companies are domain registrants.
-
2
Decide where to purchase your domain name. As mentioned above, there are GoDaddy and eNom, but there is also NameCheap.com and Register.com. Pick whichever one you want.

3
Type your domain name into the "register" field and it will tell you if it is available. Select which ending you want. You can register your domain with any sort of ending such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz or .mobi. These are considered gTLD, generic top-level domains.
-
4
Create an account with the domain registrant you chose. This is so that you can manage the domain name with ease. Once you purchase a domain name with one registrant, you'll have to pay to transfer it to another which is why it is important to research the companies beforehand.
-
5
Pay for the domain name. Different companies take different forms of payment. However, most take credit cards.
-
6
Attach your Web server to the domain so that it can sync. This process is known as DNS propagation. What this means is that the server recognizes the domain name. However, it can take anywhere from 12-24 hours to complete. To do this, locate the nameservers that your Web host provided. Replace the ones that your domain registrant lists automatically. A nameserver might look like: nameserver1.mywebhost.com. There should be two.
