How to Empty the Lamp Oil Still in Runescape

Lamp oil is a member's only, player-made item in RuneScape and you cannot purchase it. Several types of oil lamps and lanterns exist and without lamp oil, they will not function. The lamp oil still is located at the Chemist's house in Rimmington, south of Falador. There are no skill level requirements to make lamp oil or to use the lamp oil still, nor does the Chemist charge a fee.

Instructions

Travel to Rimmington. The Chemist's house is the building just west of Rimmington. The lamp oil still is located inside the building, to the east on a small table. The large still outside is the Fractionalization Still and not the one you're looking for.

Make lamp oil. In order to empty the lamp oil still, you first need to make lamp oil. If you try to empty the still and there is no oil in it, you will receive a message in your in-game text saying "You will have to make some oil in the still first." Click on one of the swamp tar from your inventory and then click on the still. You will see a message that reads, "You refine some swamp tar into lamp oil."

Use the lantern on the still. From your inventory, click on the lantern or lamp you wish to fill, and then click on the still. You will see the message "You put some oil in the lantern" or "You put some oil in the lamp" depending on which item you've filled. You have now emptied the still. The lamp needs to be empty to be filled; you cannot empty the lamp oil still into a full lantern.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you try to fill a full lantern, you get the message, "Nothing interesting happens."

  • Oil lamps and lanterns look different when filled with oil; bullseye lanterns do not.

  • Right-click on a bullseye lantern and select "examine" from the drop-down list to see if the lantern is full. The message for an empty bullseye lantern is "You need to add lamp oil before you can use it." A full lantern will show the message "A sturdy steel lantern."

  • Lamps and lanterns are the only containers that accept lamp oil.
