CDs and DVDs obtain scratches from a variety of sources.

Video games regularly go up in price as the requirements of systems and complexity of graphics engines increase. Most console systems and PC games rely on discs as the primary storage media as of May 2010. These discs quickly gain scratches and dings from normal storage, play and handling. A scratched disc need not represent game over for your favorite titles, and many inexpensive repair kits are available for PC and console gamers.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the desired amount of scratch repair solution on the shiny surface of the CD or DVD. Scratch repair solutions fill the damaged areas, creating an even surface as they dry. The amount needed will vary by manufacturer and should appear on the bottle.

    • 2

Wipe the surface of the disc gently with a microfiber cloth. Wipe from the inside to the outer edge of the disc in straight lines. This directs the fluid into the uneven areas and will not cause further scratches.

    • 3

Allow the disc to fully dry before inserting it into your console or PC disc drive.

    • 4

Play the game to see if any stuttering, read errors or other problems still occur. If this is the case, inspect it for further damage and repeat the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cracked discs cannot be repaired in this manner and typically must be either replaced or recast by a professional game disc manufacturer.

  • Never wipe any CD or DVD in a circular fashion. These media do not possess grooves like an LP record, and circular movements can cause further damage.
