Tutorial for Microsoft Publisher 2007

Microsoft Publisher 2007 lets you make professional-looking documents like posters and newsletters that are ready for printing. This desktop publishing application caters to people with little experience in desktop publishing. It comes with hundreds of customizable templates and allows more experienced users to create publications from scratch. The interface resembles other Microsoft Office applications so new users can create a custom publication in a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a desired "Publication Type" category from the left-hand pane in the opening screen. The center panel will update, showing several designs each with thumbnails. Choose the design that you wish to work with by single-clicking on it.

    • 2

Look at the right pane to see a larger preview of the design to see if it is the one you like. Customize the template by setting the color and font schemes using their respective combo boxes found below the preview. Set the page size based on your needs and click the "Create" button once you are contented with the preview.

    • 3

Hover your mouse cursor over the icons on the left of the "Format Publication" pane to know the names of each tool. You are going to use these tools in making any changes or additions to your template.

    • 4

Click on any of the page numbers found on the bottom of the window to move to that particular area of the document for editing or previewing.

    • 5

Select any of the place holder text boxes to highlight the text so you can replace the text with your own through typing or pasting from the clipboard. These place holder text boxes have a dotted outline.

    • 6

Save your work by clicking on the "Save" icon on the toolbar once you are finished with your edits. The icon looks like a floppy disk.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change the template, page size, color schemes, font schemes and other page options at any time by using the "Format Publication" pane. If you cannot see this pane, click the "View" menu and select "Task Pane." Then click on the task pane label and select "Format Publication."

  • If you made text and graphic edits to the template and decide on changing the template to another style, note that some of the edits may not be transferred to the new design. To avoid loss of data, make a backup copy of the publication before switching templates and see if all the changes are carried over to the new template.
