Write on key tags to identify a key.

Key tags vary in appearance and materials; but the intended use remains the same. When you must label a key by use or function, use a key tag to accomplish this. Some key tags contain sturdy card stock while other key tags contain plastic. The materials comprising a key tag will determine how you write on key tags for labeling purposes. Choose the right writing implement to ensure your labeling stays on a key tag.

Instructions

    • 1

Select your writing implement based on the materials the key tag contains. If the key tag is plastic, use a permanent marker. If the key tag is card stock, use a ballpoint pen.

    • 2

Write the information necessary onto the key tag with the marker or the pen. Include pertinent information about the automobile's make, model number, year, color and Vehicle Identification Number, placing each entry where it belongs on the key tag.

    • 3

Allow the marker or ballpoint ink to dry completely before you attempt to place a key onto the key tag ring or you could smudge the ink.

    • 4

Place the key onto the key tag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some key tags may contain a sleeve with a removable inner paper label. For these key tags, slide out the paper label and write on it with either a marker or a pen and slide the label back inside the key tag. Replace the paper label if you must change the label of the key tag.
