How to Use Fresh Herbs to Make Air Freshener
Air fresheners bought at retail stores might contain ingredients that are bad for you and for the environment. Making your own air freshener at home can be cost-effective and safer, and it is just another way to go green for our planet. You can make natural air freshener two ways: Dilute the herbs in water and make a fragrant spray, or fill cloth bags with fresh herbs to make sachets for your house or car.
Things You'll Need
- Herbs such as lavender, rosemary, cinnamon or mint (or whichever scents you like)
- Paper bag
- Cloth bags
- Ribbon
- Bowls
- Water
- Citrus fruit peels (lemons and oranges)
- Coffee filter
- Spray bottle
Instructions
-
Sachet
-
1
Place the herbs into a paper bag to dry them. Poke a few holes in the bag to ventilate it.
-
2
Shake the bag of herbs and check it every day to see if the herbs are dry. It takes about five to 10 days to dry herbs using this method.
-
-
3
Put the dried herbs into a small cloth bag and tie it with a ribbon. Now you have a pretty sachet you can place in your car or around your home.
Spray
-
4
Place chopped, fresh herbs into a bowl to make air freshener spray. Add orange or lemon peels and about 1½ cups of almost-hot water.
-
5
Place plastic wrap tightly over the bowl. Allow it to sit overnight.
-
6
Strain the scented water into a spray bottle using a coffee filter. Spray water around your home or car to scent it naturally.

Tips & Warnings
Vary the herbs you use each time you make sachets and spray. Cinnamon, basil and dried flowers are good choices.
Add essential oils or extracts to vary the scent as well. Vanilla and almond extract work well.
