A zipper may also jam if it gets too much dirt or debris on it or if it is handled carelessly. A zipper is often made out of metal and can be easily bent and tattered. Instructions

    • 1

Clean the zipper. If it is dirt or debris clogging the zipper it may work after cleaning it with soap and water.

    • 2

Try to slide the zipper back and forth on its tracks. Do not force the zipper too much or it may jam more. You may need to hold back excess fabric from the knapsack to do this.

    • 3

Flatten the zipper coils with a safety pin. Since zippers are often made of metal, they can bend out of shape causing the zipper to be off track. Carefully push down on the bent zipper coils with a safety pin to push them back into place.

    • 4

Fit the zipper coils together in the correct place with needle nose pliers. If you can get the coils in the correct place the zipper may be able to pick up the track again.

    • 5

Check your zipper pull. Zipper pulls have a notch in them that helps determine if the track is going together or coming apart. If the zipper pull is busted, clip it off and replace it with a new zipper pull.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work carefully with the zipper to ensure you do not damage it more.
