Chain five stiches and join with a slip stitch to make a circle. Chain three, which counts as a double crochet stitch here and throughout the pattern, and make nine double crochet stitches in the circle. Join with a slip stitch to the top of your initial three chains.

2
Chain three and make one double crochet in the same stitch, then two double crochets in every stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. Chain three and make one double crochet in the same stitch followed by one in the next stitch, then two in the following stitch. For round three, chain three stitches and make a double crochet in the same stitch. Then make one double crochet in each of the next two stitches followed by two double crochets in the third stitch; repeat this pattern around and join with a slip stitch.
Continue to increase in this manner, each time adding one more individual double crochet stitch before making two stitches in one in your pattern. Stop increasing when the circumference of the hat is approximately 1 1/2 inches smaller than the circumference of the wearer's head.

Cut a strip of fur trim to the length that matches the circumference of your hat. Sew the trim to the bottom edge of the hat using a needle and thread in a color that will blend in with the yarn. To sew the trim to the hat, simply make a series of straight stitches or back stitches through the layers of both the hat and the fur trim.
