How to Use Butter Molds

How to Use Butter Molds thumbnail
Use butter molds to give butter a decorative appearance.

The process of making homemade butter no longer occupies a modern cook the way it did in years past. When cooks used to make homemade butter using fresh dairy cream, the second step involved pressing it into a butter mold to add a decorative imprint to the top of the shape. Whether you make homemade butter or you use softened butter you purchase, use butter molds to shape your butter and make it attractive. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large bowl with about 10 ice cubes and water.

    • 2

Submerge the butter mold in the water. Leave the butter mold in the icy water for 30 minutes.

    • 3

Remove the butter mold from the water and place it into the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Take the butter mold from the refrigerator and rinse it with cool water.

    • 5

Fill the butter mold with softened butter, using the spatula to push the butter firmly into the mold. Continue filling the mold until it will not hold any more butter. Smooth the butter surface at the opening of the mold with the spatula.

    • 6

Cover the butter with a sheet of plastic wrap. Place the mold into the refrigerator for two hours.

    • 7

Remove the butter mold from the refrigerator. Loosen the sides of the butter along the inside of the butter mold with the butter knife.

    • 8

Invert the butter mold over a serving plate and shake it gently. The molded butter should pop out easily.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some butter molds have a plunger with a decorative imprint. To remove the molded butter from these molds, you simply push the plunger down and the molded butter pops out of the mold.

  • Wash the mold in warm water with dishwashing detergent, but do not soak the mold in warm water.

  • Soaking and refrigerating the mold prior to molding your butter will keep the butter from sticking to the mold.
