How to Troubleshoot a Hot Tub that Has No Power

You can't just plug a hot tub into the same yard outlet you use to plug in the holiday lights. Municipal codes come into play because of the mix of electricity, water and a weather-prone outdoor installation. Plus, most hot tubs operate at higher voltages than other appliances--like laundry dryers do. Codes require that hot tubs have their own power circuit, and there need to be special 220 Volt Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). Consequently troubleshooting a hot tub that has no power involves investigating that one circuit.

  • Switch the hot tub on and off at the hot tub control panel. Look for indicator lights that will give you a good indication if the problem is at the hot tub---the motor, for example--or in the circuit leading to the hot tub. Lights on the hot tub control panel indicate no problem with the power, but a problem with the motor itself.

  • Trace the power to the hot tub. The power will exit the house and run to a gray box located on the wall near the hot tub. Codes require it to be located nearby. The GFCI breaker will be in the gray box. Power will exit the box and end up at the hot tub.

  • Turn off the power at the gray box and also at the house. Open the panel on the box and check that the wiring is connected. You aren't allowed to make any connections if you're not a licensed electrician, but you can verify the connections.

  • Verify that the black wire from the GFCI breaker's terminal "L1" goes to "Line 1" of the hot tub spa power pack. Verify that the white wire, from the GFCI breaker's terminal "N," goes to "Neutral" on the hot tub spa power pack. Verify that the ground wire, from the GFCI breaker's terminal "GND," goes to "Ground" on the hot tub spa power pack. Verify that the red wire, from the GFCI breaker's terminal "L2," goes to "Line 2" of the hot tub spa power pack.

  • Close the box and throw the breakers again.
