You can chat with your Yahoo Messenger friends and find out if they are available by using Yahoo Mobile. Yahoo Messenger for the mobile phone allows you to change your status, send messages and respond to messages. It is available for the Blackberry, the iPhone and through SMS or text. Yahoo mobile also allows for alerts on news, weather and other interests.

Set up Yahoo Messenger for your mobile device. Sign into your Yahoo Messenger account on your home computer. Click on the mobile phone icon located next to your image and click on "Set up Mobile Phone."

Enter your number in the pop-up window and click "Continue." Yahoo will send you a confirmation text to your mobile phone. Enter that code in the next prompt box on your computer. Click "Done" after you've registered your mobile phone.

Create an SMS text on your mobile phone device. Type "get all" in the message to receive all of your available and unavailable friends. Type "get" to only receive a list of your available friends.

Send the message to your wireless carrier's short code for Yahoo Mobile. For the United States, most carriers have a short code of 92466 for Yahoo Mobile. Yahoo will reply with a message.

Open the SMS message that Yahoo sends to your phone. The message will include a list of all of your available and unavailable friends, or just a list of your available friends, depending on your message.

Repeat every 5 minutes to receive a new alert of available friends.
