How to Talk Sports for People Who Hate Sports
As hard as it may seem for some sports over-enthusiasts to understand, not everyone loves or even cares about sports. So, instead of irritating your family, friends, neighbors, bartenders, and co-workers who aren't as into sports or your favorite team as you are, there is definitely a way to talk with them about the upcoming season or game with them. The key is to be as interested in their conversation as you want them to be in yours, and see if you can relate anything that they like to your beloved sport.

Explain the sport. One of the main reasons people don't enjoy a certain sport is that they have no understanding about how the game is played. If you can get your Sport Hater to lend an ear for a moment, then offer up an explanation as to the rules of the game, the objective of the game, what makes the play of the game exciting (strategy, luck) and the history of the game. By offering some insight as to the mechanics of the games, it may give the Hater a better understanding and at the very least, an appreciation of the game.

Ask Sports Haters where they're from and talk about a team that is indigenous to their home town, state or country. Even asking where they went to college, since a lot of colleges have sports teams with impressive stats and history, is a good idea. Make it about the other person so he doesn't think you're just getting carried away with your sports obsession. By connecting the sport you love with something that is meaningful to someone else, you're far more likely to get and keep his attention.

Relate sports to other subjects the person you're talking to is interested in. For instance, if someone is a huge war buff then talk to her about the similarities of football and war: you're fighting your opponent to gain land. Or, if someone tends to be interested in chess, you can make the connection between the small moves like creating a line-up, pitching match-ups, defensive adjustments, bunting, sacrificing flies all made very calculated, perfectly timed moves to win the match. People who hate sports may dislike sports enthusiasts, so however far away from the game you can get while getting your point across is ideal.
