How to Write on Bulk Pet ID Tags

How to Write on Bulk Pet ID Tags thumbnail
Keeping an ID tag on your pet is important in case of emergency.

Pet ID tags are typically metal or plastic. They be purchased at a pet store and engraved on-site using a computerized engraving machine. However, engraving a bulk number of ID tags can be costly. Freehand do-it-yourself engraving is simple with the proper tools, although it requires more time and patience than the use of an expensive machine. When completed, an engraved pet ID tag will last years through use, wear and weathering.

Instructions

    • 1

Clamp the left and right edges of an ID tag to a sturdy surface.

    • 2

Attach the carbide bit to the Dremel and turn it on.

    • 3

For plastic tags, use a slow speed to prevent melting. For metal, a higher speed is necessary.

    • 4

Spray bit and tag surface with water or lubricant.

    • 5

Gently press the bit to the desired place on the tag, and slowly drag to engrave numbers, letters and shapes. Pick up the bit in between characters.

    • 6

      Spray clean when finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a fine-tipped marker to write desired characters on the tag in order to guide engraving. A permanent marker can be used to write on tags without engraving, but the tag's information will wear away quickly.
