How to Make Confidential Carbon Copies

How to Make Confidential Carbon Copies thumbnail
Make confidential carbon copies using the "Bcc" option.

Confidentially carbon copying someone on an email is known as "blind carbon copy" or "Bcc." This is a useful tool when you do not want recipients to know the email addresses of other recipients. This would be the case when you are sending out a newsletter at work to hundreds of people or when your supervisor wants to be kept in the loop on a sensitive issue. Most email clients have this functionality available.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your email client, whether it be Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail or a web-based email service.

    • 2

Hit the button that creates a new email message. In Outlook, the button is the left one that says "New." Click on it, scroll down and click "Mail Message."

    • 3

Type the recipients' email addresses in the "To:" field. Type the email address or addresses of those that you want to send the message to confidentially in the "Bcc" field.

    • 4

Type a topic or reason for the email in the "Subject" field.

    • 5

Type the email in the message body. Hit the "Send" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • In Outlook 2007, you may have to hit the "Show Bcc" button in the top toolbar to get the "Bcc" field to appear.
