Installation of a Curbless Shower
A curbless shower is designed for individuals in a wheelchair and people who cannot get into a bathtub or shower. It sits level with the existing floor to allow easy access in and out of the enclosure. A curbless shower can be installed in your bathroom by using a pre-fabricated shower that sits directly on the existing floor. This means that the installation is similar to a standard bathroom shower. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Marine-grade plywood sheets
- Pencil
- Table saw
- Waterproof membrane
- Staple gun
- Utility knife
- Power drill
Instructions

1
Measure the length of the wall where the curbless shower will be installed with the tape measure. You'll want at least 60 inches for the length of the shower.
-
2
Measure out into the room to see how much space you can use for the width of the shower. A depth of 36 to 42 inches is necessary for easy accessibility and water control.
-
-
3
Transfer the length of the shower to a marine-grade plywood sheet. Mark where the sheet will be cut with the pencil. Cut along the mark with the table saw. Repeat this step for the depth of the shower.
-
4
Attach the plywood sheet to the studs of the walls with screws, using the power drill. The plywood sheets act as reinforcement for the hand rails.
-
5
Set the waterproof membrane on the floor of the shower and extend it up the sides 8 to 12 inches. Secure the membrane to the plywood sheets with the staple gun. Cut a hole for the drain with the utility knife.
-
6
Set the pre-fabricated shower base into place over the drain. Connect the compression fitting to the drain assembly to secure the base to the floor.
-
7
Install the shower enclosure to the shower and secure it to the wood studs with the power drill. Attach the shower head and support bars to the side of the shower to complete the installation.
