How to Learn to Become an Esthetician
There are few industries that could be called "recession proof," but it's safe to say that the beauty industry is certainly one of them. Men and women are willing to pay considerable amounts of money to be beautiful. Learning to become an esthetician can lead to a very lucrative career. However, the beauty industry is a competitive one, so you'll want to prepare yourself and choose a reputable school where you can best learn your trade. Once you get licensed, take advanced courses so you can provide the best service and stay competitive.

1
Research local schools of cosmetology. Start by visiting local salons and asking the stylists if they've heard good or bad things about the local schools. Ask your own stylist where she went to school. Some things to consider are tuition costs, length of program, job placement rate and general reputation. Pick the school that best suits your learning style and fits your budget.
-
2
Enroll in the school of your choice. Typically, the minimum requirements are that you are at least 16 years of age or that you have a high school diploma or equivalent. Check with your school's admissions office for any additional enrollment requirements.

3
Buy your books and training equipment. Some schools will include these materials in your tuition fees, so you may not have to take this step. However, even if your school doesn't include the cost of books and equipment, they will have these materials on location for you to purchase; you typically won't need to go out and find them on your own.
-
4
Attend your classes. Schools of cosmetology, like most schools, have very strict attendance policies. Even if you're a quick study, you still need to show up for class. Take advantage of your instructors' knowledge, ask questions and pay attention. Remember that you're paying to be there; don't let that money go to waste.
-
5
Take your State Board of Cosmetology Licensing Exam. At the end of your program, you will need to pass a licensing exam to become a licensed esthetician. The requirements for this procedure vary from state to state, but your cosmetology school will have all of the information you'll need. Don't be nervous about this test; if you've gone to all of your classes, studied hard and taken the practice exams provided by your school, you should go into this exam feeling prepared and confident.

6
Take advanced classes. Just because you've passed your exam doesn't mean you know everything about being an esthetician. There are new techniques and products being developed constantly and it's up to you to stay on top of them. Many high-end skin care companies offer advanced classes to licensed estheticians and you should be able to take advanced courses at your cosmetology school. Availability of these kinds of courses will vary by locale, so check with your school for more information.
