Instructions

Use a tape measure to determine the size of the ceramic lamp base in your existing motion detector light. Turn your light fixture over so you can see the back of the light, then look inside the fixture. The device that holds all of the light fixture wiring is the ceramic lamp base.

Unscrew the ceramic lamp base from your light fixture and pull it out. There are two sections to a ceramic lamp base. The bottom section is where the wires run. It screws into the top section, which is where the light bulb screws into your light fixture. When you replace a ceramic lamp base, you replace the top and the bottom. Therefore, it's necessary to remove both sections of the ceramic lamp base when you unscrew it.

Insert your new ceramic lamp base into your light fixture. Slide the bottom of the new ceramic lamp base up the back of your light fixture until it's in the same position as the old one. Position the top of the ceramic lamp base through the front of the light fixture so it screws into the back section. Tighten the two pieces together. When you finish, the top section of your ceramic lamp base will be in position to hold a new light bulb, and the bottom section of your ceramic lamp base will allow the wires to stick out the back of the light fixture.
