How to Build a Very Simple Platform Bed

Simple platform beds, like those used for futon mattresses, can be made in many different designs. Platform beds built low to the ground are generally sturdier and, unlike many raised platform beds, aren't squeaky and creaky after some use. Many varieties of platform beds are available commercially, but building your own can save you a lot of money.

Things You'll Need

  • 80 x 10 x 5-inch planks, 3
  • 5 x 60 x 1-inch slats, 10
  • Drill
  • 5 x 1/4-inch flathead bolts, 30

Instructions

    • 1

Position the three planks so the outer ones are 60 inches apart, and the inner one is in the center, 30 inches from either side plank.

    • 2

Lay the 10 slats three inches apart across the three planks, with the two end slats flush with the ends of the three bottom planks.

    • 3

Drill a hole in between each of the 10 slats and the bottom planks, 30 holes in all.

    • 4

Drill in the 30 flathead bolts so the heads are flush, or slightly below the slat surface. This makes a simple, standard queen-sized platform bed.

Tips & Warnings

  • This type of platform bed suits a futon mattress.

  • The bed can easily be dismantled, moved and stored by simply unscrewing the bolts from the slats. Make sure you keep all the bolts in a safe place so that reassembly is easy.

  • Vary the size of the bed by choosing longer or shorter planks and matching slats.

  • The standard single bed size is 39 x 75 inches; double beds are 54 x 75 inches; queens are 60 x 80 inches, kings are 76 x 80 inches; and the California king is 72 x 84 inches.
