Whether you're camping or you're wanting to grill your next meal the old-fashioned way, starting a coal fire allows you to do so. Starting a coal fire at home doesn't require very much time and is an easy way to prepare meats, fish and a variety of other recipes whether you're using a fire pit or a stand-up charcoal grill.

  • Charcoal
  • Lighter fluid

      Add about three pounds of black charcoal to the reservoir of the charcoal grill.

      Squirt a liberal amount of lighter fluid over the charcoal. Use approximately four ounces of the fluid over the area of the coals.

      Strike a match and touch it to several places in the pile of fluid-covered coals. Be careful to not burn yourself as lighter fluid is very combustible.

      Allow the charcoal to burn with the grill covered for about 15 to 20 minutes.

      Turn the burning coals with a poker before preparing your favorite grilled recipes.
