Add a sealcoat to your blacktop driveway.

Blacktop is a common material used most frequently for a homeowner's driveway. While a well cared for driveway can look elegant and boost the appeal of a home, a cracked and worn blacktop simply looks unappealing and can detract from a home. By applying a layer of sealcoat to your driveway, you can revitalize the look of the surface and improve your curb appeal. The process is relatively easy and can be accomplished in one day. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Push back any grass that may be overhanging onto the blacktop surface by running a lawn edger along the perimeter of the driveway.

    • 2

Remove oil stains on the driveway by mixing liquid dish detergent and warm tap water in a small bucket and scrubbing the solution onto the stains with a plastic brush. Use a small circular scrubbing motion to clean the stain, then rinse away the soapy mixture with tap water. Allow the spot to air-dry before continuing the project.

    • 3

Repair cracks in the blacktop by first brushing out grime and debris with the wire brush, then apply a bead of crack filler into the cleaned cracks. Smooth over the filler with a putty knife so that the filler is even with the blacktop surface.

    • 4

Use a spare piece of lumber to thoroughly mix the driveway sealer. There should be no noticeable lumps or inconsistency in the texture of the mixture.

    • 5

Pour the blacktop sealer onto the driveway in a 4-foot section.

    • 6

Smooth the sealer with the applicator brush to achieve a smooth, uniform layer on the driveway. Repeat the process working in 4-foot sections until the blacktop driveway is completely sealed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply the blacktop sealer only after the repairs to the cracks have dried for six hours.
