How to Make a Glass Box With Lights Inside

Wear safety gear when drilling out the glass block.

Hardware stores carry glass blocks, which make the perfect light-up glass box. While you are at the hardware store, pick up a lamp kit for a light inside the box. You can also use string lights to light up the inside of the box. You likely will have to practice drilling out the glass brick since drilling too hard or fast will crack it. Take your time drilling, and do not apply too much force.

Things You'll Need

• Protective eye wear
• Face mask
• Gloves
• Glass block
• Handheld drill or drill press
• Garden hose
• Warm water
• Shop vacuum
• String lights or lamp kit

Instructions

1. Choose an area where glass dust will not ruin anything, such as a garage or driveway. Put on protective eye wear, face mask and gloves.

2. Use a handheld drill or drill press to make a hole in the bottom of the glass block. Another person needs to use a garden hose to constantly pour water over the drilling area to preventing overheating.

3. Clean the inside of the glass block with warm water, making sure to remove all the glass dust. Clean up the glass dust on the floor and drill or drill press using a shop vacuum. Place the glass block somewhere clean and dry for several days.

4. Feed string lights or a lamp kit inside the glass block once the block is completely dry. Paint the outside of the block or leave it plain.
