Vegetable oil is a lipid made from vegetable products such as seeds and legumes, and is often used during food preparation to fry foods and make salad dressings, cakes and cookies. Vegetable oil also adds healthy fat to any diet, and some types of vegetable oil, such as sunflower oil, may help to remove cholesterol. You can make your own vegetable oil from home with sunflower seeds, a stove, oven, and a pot of hot water.
Things You'll Need
- Sunflower seeds
- Seed mill or blender
- Two containers
- Container lid
- Cooking sheet
- Stove or water boiler
Shell the sunflower seeds. Use a seed mill if available, or a blender if not. If using a blender, place the seeds in the blender and use the "pulse" setting for a few repetitions of a few seconds. Remove the seeds. Drop them into a container of water and remove any remaining shell fragments from the surface of the water. Empty the container and collect the seeds.
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and place the sunflower seeds on a cookie sheet. Roast in the oven for about 30 minutes or until brown. Remove the sunflower seeds from the oven, allow to cool, and then crush them into a paste with the pestle.
Fill the water container with water and the seed paste. Heat the water to boiling. When the vegetable oil rises to the top, skim the oil off the top with a spoon and place it in a second container. Place a lid on the container and store the oil in a dry location at room temperature.
Tips & Warnings
- To make the process of extracting vegetable oil easier, you can buy shelled sunflower seeds instead of shelling them in a mill or blender.
