How to Get a Business Identification Number in Canada thumbnail
A business number is used for tax purposes and business identification.

A business number (BN) is a nine-digit identifier attached to your business for identification and tax purposes. You will need a business number to register for accounts with the Canada Revenue Agency, including goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST); payroll; import/export; and corporation income tax.

Getting a business number before you start doing business will allow you to be ready to remit tax, file returns, and pay employees on time.

Visit the Canada Revenue Agency website. Search for "business number." Click on the link that says "RC2, The Business Number and Your Canada Revenue Agency Accounts."
