Enrolling your puppy in a K9 training program can provide you with the peace of mind of having protection of property and family safety. As the owner of a K9 trained dog, you will also receive voice command and handling training while developing a strong bond with your puppy. Instructions

    • 1

Research trainers in your area. Most organizations that participate in K9 training work closely with the local police force. See the resources section below for a list of local accredited trainers.

    • 2

Determine the type of training environment that you are interested in. The two main types are private in-home sessions and boot camp.

    • 3

Pick a trainer/program that meets your criteria. K9 training can turn your puppy into an excellent protection (family and property) or working (guard and shop) dog.

    • 4

Enroll in the class by calling the trainer you have selected. Give them your pet's information including their name, age and level of training you desire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some companies allow you to enroll online.

  • Certain breeds, such as the German Shepard Dog and the Rottweiler, are preferred for K9 training.

  • It usually takes a puppy at least 30 repetitions before they properly understand a command, so remember to be patient with them.

  • Boot camp usually lasts at least two weeks and often you will not see your pet at all during this session.

  • Some trainers use "force of hand" training. It is important to ask their techniques up front if you are not comfortable with this.

  • You must always be consistent with praise and discipline to keep the training command-based to avoid an aggressive instinct from forming.
