How to Change the Number of Colors on a Mac Monitor

The number of colors your monitor displays (color depth) can be adjusted in either of two ways.

Things You'll Need:

  • Multiscan Computer Monitors
  • Mac OS 9.0

    Using the Control Strip

  1. Step 1

    Open the Control Strip by clicking its end.

  2. Step 2

    Click the TV icon that has color bars.

  3. Step 3

    Select from the choices offered: Color LCD, 256 Grays, 256 Colors, Thousands of Colors, and Millions of Colors. Not all Macs offer all choices. Your screen color depth changes instantly.

  4. Step 4

    Close the Control Strip.

  5. Using the Monitors & Sound Control Panel

  6. Step 1

    Click the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and choose Monitors & Sound.

  7. Step 2

    Click the Monitor icon.

  8. Step 3

    Select your color depth. Your screen color depth changes instantly.

  9. Step 4

    Click the close box.
