Graffiti can be fantastik artwork.

Drawing in the graffiti style is quite a popular artistic skill to learn. Often seen in a negative light because of its association with vandalism, the graffiti style can, nevertheless, be used to create some fantastic artwork. It is often commissioned to be painted on walls in cities as well as on canvas. Drawing on walls without permission is, however, illegal.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out a word that you want to be written in the graffiti style. Leave plenty of space in between each letter so that you can bulk the letters out later. Use a pencil at this stage and stay faint and loose with your lines.

    • 2

Use reference images found on the Internet to decide which graffiti style you want to use. The bubble style is popular, as is the shadow style, but there are plenty to choose from.

    • 3

Using your pencil, keeping your strokes light, experiment with different sizes and styles of letters. Avoid too much erasing here.

    • 4

Settle on a style and look that you like and start to make the edges stand out. Do this by taking your fine liner pen and going over the pencil lines you want to keep. On one side of the letter use very thick lines (you may need a marker pen for this), and on the other, keep the lines thin. This will create form.

    • 5

Add some more details, if you want, with your pencil first, then your fine liner. After this, add color and shading with some marker pens. Use a dark color for the shaded parts of the letter, which are often on the bottom of the letters and either the right or left side. Block in the rest of the letters with your preferred color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find plenty of reference images and combine different styles to create your own.

  • High quality marker pens will add an element of professionalism to your work.

  • Pens can leak, so be aware of this.
