The service is free and is available 24 hours a day, so you'll be able to check your refund status at the time that is most convenient for you. You will only be asked two questions to receive the information you desire.

      Prepare the information you'll need to obtain the status of your North Carolina tax refund. Find your Social Security number and expected refund amount. You can find your refund amount on a copy of your tax return documents. If you filed electronically, you can find this information by downloading a copy of your tax return by visiting the website where you filed your taxes.

      Visit the North Carolina Department of Revenue's Refund Inquiry Selection page (see Resources).

      Select "Check the status of your 2009 original income tax refund" and click "next."

      Enter your Social Security number and refund amount.

      Click "submit."

Tips & Warnings

  • Your refund amount will appear on line 31 of Form D-400. Remember to look on your state tax return forms, not the federal forms.

  • If you would rather check your tax return status via phone, the number to call is 1-877-252-4052. You will need to provide the same information as on the online form.
