How to File Virginia Unemployment Online

Instructions

1. Visit the Virginia Employment Commission's website portal and click on the link for "Unemployment Insurance."

2. Click on the link that reads "File Your Claim Online."

3. Click on the continue button and register by following the instructions on the screen. You will be prompted to create a user ID and password.

4. Sign-in with the new user ID and password, once you receive confirmation of your registration by email.

5. Fill out the application for unemployment benefits, once you're signed in, by answering the questions on the screen as prompted.

6. Wait for a period of two weeks before your first check arrives. You may periodically check the status of your application by signing into the website and reviewing your application status. If after two weeks, your status has not updated, and you have not received an unemployment check, you will need to contact the Virginia Employment Commission at 1-866-832-2363 and speak with a customer service representative.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure you print out your application once you have completed it for future reference. You will want to print it when prompted to review for accuracy, before you submit it.

• The first week of your application is considered an unpaid waiting week. You will not receive benefits for the first week claimed, but for each week thereafter.
