Clean
-
1
Place a few drops of detergent into a bucketful of water. Dip a cloth into the bucket and wring it out to remove most of the water. Wipe the surface of the stainless steel to remove any dirt, grease and caked-on items from the surface of the steel.
-
2
Dry the surface of the steel with dry, soft cloths. Work in circular motions to reduce streaking and to add a shine to the surface of the metal.
-
-
3
Wipe some stainless steel polish over the surface of the stainless steel to add extra shine and to disguise small surface scratches. Do not use stainless steel polish for items that will be used with food service, or for items that will hold medical supplies or other medicine-related materials. The polish can upset the balance of ingredients and may cause a strange taste or health problems.
Sanitize

4
Create a mixture of equal parts iodine, phosphoric acid and rubbing alcohol. Add water to this mixture in a ratio of 10 parts water to 1 part acid solution. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles while mixing chemicals and acids.
-
5
Place the stainless steel items in this solution if they are small, or wipe over the surface of larger objects. Allow the stainless steel to soak for at least 10 minutes. The mixture of ingredients will sanitize the surface of the steel and make it safe for medical and food use. This sanitizing method is better than sanitizing through bleach because it does not break down the metal like bleach does.
-
6
Dry the stainless steel with a lint-free cloth or allow the metal to air-dry. Store the metal in an area that will not become contaminated by dust or oil.
