How to Find Percentages of Numbers

We use percentages almost everyday of our lives. Finding percentages of numbers is useful when shopping to see how big of a discount you will receive. Being able to figure this out saves you time so you don't have to take each item to the register to see how much you will be saving.

Things You'll Need

• Paper
• Pen
• Calculator

Instructions

1. Express your percent and total number as an equation. (i.e. If you are looking for 15 percent of 60, write it as x = 15% * 60).

2. Convert your percent in the equation to a decimal by dividing it by 100. (i.e. 15% / 100 = 0.15. Your equation will now read x = 0.15 * 60)

3. Solve for "x" by multiplying the two numbers together (i.e. 0.15 * 60 = 9, therefore x = 9. You can then see that 15 percent of 60 is 9).
