How to Clean Dog Urine Smell

Save

No matter how well-trained your dog is, the occasional urine accident will occur indoors. The most important part of tending to dog urine accidents is to remove the urine entirely so odor-causing bacteria are not left behind. This bacteria gives your dog the message that the site of the urine smell is a place where it's acceptable for him to urinate again. You can remove dog urine smell from carpeting and upholstered furniture without the need for expensive commercial products.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels
  • Trash bag
  • Pet odor neutralizer with enzymes
  • Plastic wrap
  • Vacuum
  • Baking soda
  • Spray bottle
  • Water
  • White vinegar
  • Clean cloths
  • Wet vacuum

Cleaning Dog Urine Smell From Carpets

  • Wick up as much of the dog urine from your carpeting with a thick layer of paper towels. Toss out soiled paper towels and continue to soak up the dog urine with fresh paper towels until no further urine stain transfers to the towels.

  • Pour enzyme pet odor neutralizer on the site of the dog urine smell on your carpet, ensuring that you use enough to soak down to the carpet pad.

  • Press plastic wrap onto the site of the urine smell so the plastic wrap, pet odor neutralizer and carpet are all in contact. Allow the plastic wrap to remain on the site overnight so the enzymes in the neutralizer can break down and absorb odor-causing bacteria.

  • Remove and discard the plastic wrap. Vacuum the site of the dog urine smell to remove the neutralizer and urine smell.

Cleaning Dog Urine Smells From Upholstered Furniture

  • Press a thick layer of paper towels onto the site of the dog urine stain on your upholstered furniture. Exchange soiled paper towels for clean ones and continue to blot up the urine stain until you're unable to wick up anymore.

  • Cover the site of the dog urine smell with a liberal amount of baking soda. Remove the baking soda from your furniture as soon as it turns yellow from the urine, then replace with fresh baking soda. Keep the last application of baking soda on the site of the urine smell overnight.

  • Remove the baking soda from your upholstered furniture with the household vacuum.

  • Blend one part white vinegar and two parts water in a plastic spray bottle. Spray the water and vinegar spray on the dog urine smell then dab it into the fibers with a clean cloth.

  • Rinse the diluted vinegar from your upholstered furniture by blotting at the site with a clean cloth soaked with cool water. Use paper towels to blot up excess moisture. Wet vac your upholstered furniture to remove all moisture or allow the furniture to air dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place paper towels used to wick up the dog urine in the area where you want your dog to go to the bathroom. The smell on the paper towels will tell him he's in the correct location.
  • Avoid using ammonia to remove dog urine smells as ammonia magnifies the urine odor.
