Convert RAX to MP3 for universal compatibility

RAX is the default file format for music downloaded from RealNetwork's Rhapsody store. The format is proprietary, and is not supported by most multimedia players. Converting music in RAX format to MP3 will allow you to play the files in virtually all players. There are a number of conversion utilities that can convert RAX to MP3. Freeware versions of these programs generally have some locked features that may be activated by purchasing the program. For basic conversion purposes, the freeware programs may be adequate.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a conversion utility such as DRM Converter, DRM Removal or SoundTaxi Professional. Specify where you want to download the installation file, and double-click to begin installing. Follow simple on-screen instructions to walk through the installation process.

    • 2

Launch the program. In the main interface, specify what format you want to convert the RAX files to. Since most conversion utilities have cross-format capabilities, you will have to specify output format as MP3. Locate the "Encoder" or "Output" drop-down box, and select MP3 by clicking on it.

    • 3

Configure output parameters. Since MP3 is a lossy format, you can choose from different compression qualities. Higher compression will reduce the size of output files but also give lower-quality audio. If you have limited disk storage, or a slow computer, convert to lower-quality MP3 files.

    • 4

Generate the list of files to be converted. Click on "Add" or "Select Files" from the program's main interface and browse through the disk to locate the files. Select RAX files by highlighting the icons and clicking "Open" or "OK." Some programs have drag-and-drop capabilities allowing you to create the conversion list by clicking on the files or folders and dragging them to the program's window.

    • 5

Review the conversion list. Once RAX files are added, check whether you want to add or remove entries from the list. Conversion utilities retain the source file after conversion, meaning that you will have two files for each audio track--the original RAX and the output MP3; make sure you remove additional RAX files from the list, to save conversion time and disk space.

    • 6

Specify an output directory. Click on "Browse" and direct the program to the directory you want to store the output files in.

    • 7

Convert the files. Click on "Start" or "Convert" to begin. Time for the conversion process will depend on computer configuration, the type of conversion program you use, and how many files are in the conversion list. You may see progress on a status bar in some programs.

    • 8

Check output files. Wait for the program to finish converting and navigate to the output folder. Right-click on a file icon and check format from "Properties." Double-click on the file; the default program associated with MP3 files should load and start playback.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some free programs may limit how may days or how many times they can be used. Convert in bulk amounts and store the files in an external drive, if you want to keep using the free version.

  • Check the program's system requirements before downloading. Larger programs may slow down system processes.
