How to Create a Subwoofer Cable
Home subwoofers receive their input signal from the receiver via a dedicated subwoofer cable. While these are easy to purchase commercially, you can make your own cable out of easy-to-obtain parts. This could be useful if you need a specific length of cable for your setup.
Things You'll Need
- Insulated 2-conductor wire
- Wire cutters
- Wire strippers
- Two male RCA plugs
- Soldering iron
- Rosin core solder
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a length of insulated 2-conductor wire long enough for your application with a pair of wire cutters.
-
2
Remove 1 inch of the outer jacket with your wire cutters, then 1/2 inch of the insulation surrounding each of the conductors.
-
-
3
Unscrew the jacket attached to one of your male RCA plugs. Slide the jacket onto the wire, with the threaded end closest to the end of the wire.
-
4
Solder the positive lead of the wire to the center pin of the RCA plug. Touch the lead and the pin together with the soldering iron until they're hot, then touch the solder to the joint. When the solder flows into the joint, remove the soldering iron and let them cool.
-
5
Solder the negative lead to the outer tab of the RCA plug, using the same method.
-
6
Slide the jacket over the solder joints and screw it on to the plug.
-
7
Repeat Steps 3 through 6 with the second plug on the other end of the wire.
