The creatures have to be cared for much like real pets, and keeping them happy is one of the required tasks. There are many different things you can do to increase the happiness of your Neopet.

Neopets can become sad when they are feeling hungry or dying. You can easily remedy this by simply feeding them. Search the shop wizard to find some delicious foods for your pet or pay a visit to one of the food shops. If you are running low on neopoints, then go to the soup faerie. She will feed any pet as long as your neopoints balance is under 3000np. This amount includes points on hand, bank balance and shop till.
Other methods of getting free foods would be by visiting the omelet or giant jelly once a day. The fishing hole is another place that offers free food items, but they are completely random. A food that is especially helpful in increasing a Neopet's happiness is the happy negg, which you can find through the shop wizard or by trading in other neggs to the negg faerie on Terror Mountain.

Many Neopets get unhappy when they are bored. There are several fun activities you can do to cheer them up. Go to Roo Island and give them a ride on the merry-go-round. This will cost 50np per pet and can be done as many times as needed to increase their happiness. Another spot to take a Neopet is Mystery Island. They can go on a tiki tour for 50np, and it usually perks them right up.

Another method of making sad pets happy is to groom them. There is a grooming parlour located in the Neopian Bazaar that sells everything from hair brushes to lipstick. All of the items will increase a pet's happiness level.

Neopets are similar to real pets in that you have to play with them. There are many toys and games that you can purchase for them. Simply go to the shop wizard and search for items like balls or plushies. There are also toy stores in the many shop areas. Exploring the site may also cause a random event to occur. These events often give out foods, toys and many other items for your pet.
