An excellent cover letter can truly differentiate a candidate from other applicants with similar qualifications and experience. Writing a cover letter gives you an opportunity to stand out from a sea of resumes that any human resources department is flooded with. Properly structuring your cover letter can make a huge difference in how it is perceived, and there are several guidelines and tips that you should follow when writing a cover letter.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your address, the date, the name of the person you are emailing, his title, the company's name and the company's address in the top left corner of the cover letter.

    • 2

Start the cover letter off with "Dear Mr./Mrs. Employer." Write a brief first paragraph stating what position you are applying for and why this position interests you. Keep this paragraph two to three sentences long.

    • 3

Write a longer second paragraph explaining why you would be a great fit for the position and why this position appeals to you. Go over your strengths, skills, qualifications and relevant work experience. Start the paragraph off with a strong statement about why your skills and experience are a perfect match for the job, then back it up with evidence throughout the paragraph.

    • 4

Conclude the cover letter with a short, final paragraph of two to four sentences. Mention that you would like to interview for the position, and state that you have sent your resume in to the company or organization. Make sure to thank the reader for his or her time. Finish the cover letter with "Sincerely" and then your name and signature underneath.
